Asylum seekers halted after President Trump signs executive orders

On Monday, President Donald Trump signed numerous executive orders into action, marking the start of a new era in Washington.

Among the changes, a new policy ended the Customs and Border Patrol CBP One app, which allowed nearly 1 million people to legally enter the United States. Many people were caught off guard after receiving a message saying, “Existing appointments scheduled through CBP One are no longer valid.”

“There are people who have appointments for the next two weeks, who are not going to be able to enter the United States lawfully to seek asylum,” Sophia Genovese, an attorney with the New Mexico Immigrant Law Center, said.

Genovese says Trump’s executive orders put more people at risk trying to enter the country legally.

“Every single one of my clients who has traveled through Mexico to reach the southern border of the United States to seek asylum has been kidnapped,” Genovese said. “They have been extorted by Mexican law enforcement and Mexican cartels. Every single one of them.”
